Research process

First we talked together and shared questions on why we had a Fell engine in Featherston.

Our teacher read us ‘Hero of the Hill’, a book written by Joy Cowley and illustrated by Philip Webb, about the ‘Fells’.
We visited the Fell Locomotive Museum to see H 199 and the Fell brake-van F 210. We saw how the Fell rail system helped the train go up and down the steep Rimutaka Incline, a model of Cross Creek, lots of photographs, and things like shovels, bells, and signal tablets.
We listened to visiting speakers and looked at old photographs.

We completed sketches and colourful pictures of the engine with dye and collage.
