Remembering

War Memorial

Kilbirnie School has a war memorial at the school gate in Moxham Avenue to remember the pupils and teachers from Kilbirnie School who died in World War One. Fundraising began in 1917 for a memorial fence. The fence was unveiled in August, 1921. In 1961 a new granite tablet replaced the old marble one.

This page shows the names on the Kilbirnie war memorial and you can read about some of the soldiers here.

Roll of Honour

A Roll of Honour board hangs in the school hall. It was unveiled in 1920. It has the names of 186 ex pupils and teachers who served in World War One. There is one woman, Gladys Worboys, who was a nurse in England. She was the Kilbirnie School headmaster’s daughter. A + beside a name tells who died at the war.

This page has the names on the Roll of Honour board.

Anzac Day

Over the years, men and women who went to World War One have been remembered on Anzac Day, 25 April. This day is the anniversary of New Zealand and Australian troops landing at Gallipoli in World War One.

Armistice Day

Armistice Day, 11 November, is another day for remembering people who went to the war. On this day in 1918 the Allies of World War One and Germany agreed to stop fighting.
